Our Story

Michaels Group Homes is a Third Generation family company which started in the Albany, NY region in the 1950’s. Over the years, our company has expanded to build throughout our region covering Albany, Schenectady, Rennselaer, Saratoga, and Warren Counties. Our founder Jim Michaels, started the company by building one home each year. That soon turned into a successful family homebuilding company which included his wife Marion Michaels. Jim and Marion had a vision for building quality new homes with state of the art designs to accommodate people’s ever changing lifestyles. Their visions quickly became reality as the designs and lifestyle’s were extremely well received both locally and on a national stage.

In the early 1980’s Jim and Marion’s sons, J. David Michaels and John Michaels returned to the family business and helped grow the family company. David and John helped develop some of the most recognizable new home communities throughout the region. Their focus on our customers, attention to detail, new designs, and creating new and enjoyable lifestyles, helped continue the tradition of the family homebuilding business.

Today, Michaels Group Homes, has remained a family company as we are in our Third Generation of business. The vision, values and traditions that began in the 1950’s continue to be the foundation for our company as we work to provide quality, value and comfort in all of our new homes. Over the years we have come to be known as one of the most respected home building companies in New York State.

Our Founders

Michaels Group Homes owes a debt of gratitude to the gentlemen who shaped our company values and philosophies.  James W. Michaels (center), was the original founder of the Michaels homebuilding company. His vision, innovation, and aspirations set the stage for what our company has become today. Jim passed away from A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 1992.

 J. David Michaels (right) and John Michaels (left) followed in their father’s footsteps to help grow the company into one of the most respected family companies in Upstate NY.  David was instrumental and forward thinking when it came to the designs and products we have become known for. One of our everlasting goals is to be proud of our communities years after they are built and established. David’s vision and appreciation for the design and quality of our homes helped set our standards for excellence in homebuilding and well known reputation for delivering quality homes and lifestyles. David is currently active in real estate development and has been instrumental in furthering our company to its Third Generation.

John Michaels expanded on what his father aimed the company to be. John was a big thinker and had an extraordinary way of looking at business and life in general. John formed special relationships with his employees, business partners and customers. Much of this was due to his passion for helping others.  John also possessed a never settle attitude and was constantly evaluating life and business to initiate change. On a personal level, John never settled to run a homebuilding company, as he also ventured in to legal work, earning a Law Degree in the early 90’s and also obtaining his pilots license in 2000. It was no different with his homebuilding company as many of our current processes, goals, and principals were initiated, evaluated, and perfected by John. John passed away in 2014, and has left us with a lifetime of lessons, memories, and smiles.
